Comet C/2014 Q2 Lovejoy is still out there - it's just not in the news anymore. At magnitude 6, it's easily visible with binoculars or even the naked eye in very dark skies. Currently, the comet is in the constellation Andromeda. Here's a shot of it I got tonight.
The comet moves over the backdrop of stars. This photo is a "stack" of many 30-second exposures. When stacking, I track the nucleus of the comet so all the photos align to that ... since it moves over the stars, the stars appear to trail as the comet is tracked in the photos...
