Creating custom pier plate

Submitted by jimwcoleman

My father-in-law has a good wood shop, so we used it to create a custom pier plate for the observatory. Great care was taken to use only the best wood and to glue/compress it into strong layers that could support the weight and motion of the astrophotography equipment without flexure. The choice was wood or aluminum. Both had their advantages and disadvantages but wood was chosen due to budget and time constraints. At the time of this writing, the pier plate has ten years of use on it and not once have I  ever had a single issue with it.
